Vana Grand weaved her way between horses in upper stretch en route to a half-length victory in a $71,4000 maiden special weight contest Oct. 19 at Woodbine.
Dropping well off the pace early in the 1 1/16-mile contest for 2-year-old fillies, Vana Grand inched her way closer on the final bend, then got blocked trying to go around horses before swinging back in and splitting foes to get up in time.
The dark bay filly is owned by Colebrook Farms and was bred in Kentucky by Judy Clemow. She is the second foal out of Steely Vana, whose dam Hit the Bid is a half-sister to Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Casual Lies.
Among Sky Kingdom’s first crop of runners this year is the Grade 1-placed colt Wrecking Crew, second in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Best Pal S. (G2).
